Spanish

PictureStudents Apply their Spanish in Oaxaca
Introduction to Spanish

Introduction to Spanish, a seventh grade year-long course, is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, phonology, reading, writing, listening, and translation skills in conjunction with the culture and geography of native speakers of Spanish. Conversational Spanish is emphasized in different activities so that students can begin to express themselves in Spanish about topics of everyday interest and activities. Reading is done aloud in class with an alternating emphasis on correct pronunciation, clear articulation, and content comprehension. Students apply writing skills in creation of projects for the Country Fair project held in conjunction with the Spanish I Mexican Market.

Spanish I

Spanish I is an eighth-grade year-long course designed for students who may or may not have had previous exposure to the fundamentals of the language and culture. The foundation of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation-phonology, reading, writing, listening, and translation skills are thoroughly reviewed and advanced. The goal of this class is to develop mastery of material through acquisition of rules and vocabulary that students are able to transfer to new situations, thus generating authentic use of the language. Much of the second semester of this class is dedicated to preparation for the annual Mexican Market and the Field Study Tour to Mexico.
