SERVICE LEARNING
Everyone knows how important
community service is, but how
many really get involved, especially
in a meaningful way? One of HWA's
core values is community, and a
major component of that is serving
our community.
Helping those less privileged is our
community service mission. The Headwaters family helped a homeless man in Twin Bridges, Montana repair an old building into serviceable accommodations; they've volunteered at Eagle Mount, a therapeutic recreation provider for those with disabilities; they've created oral histories by interviewing elderly residents of nursing homes and then presenting them back to an appreciative audience; they've made adobe bricks for homes in Norogachi, Mexico; and they've helped plant sustainable gardens in Ecuador.
What's the difference between community service and service learning? Service learning is community service on steroids: besides lending a helping hand, service learning includes an educational component. For example, when helping the homeless man, English students studied literature about homeless people. Besides helping that person, the students took the plight of the homeless so much to heart that they actually, on their own initiative, petitioned the Bozeman City Council to provide more for Bozeman's homeless population. Please ask us for more examples of HWA's compassion.
