OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Enhancing Student Development
Each year, Headwaters Academy students participate in eight exciting days of outdoor education as a regular part of the curriculum.* Twice a year, three days are enjoyed in a wilderness setting, and two days a year are devoted to downhill skiing. Besides downhill skiing, outdoor education activities may include any of the following: camping, canoeing, backpacking, snow shoeing, hiking, rock climbing, and Nordic skiing.
The program has three specific student goals:
1. To learn life-long outdoor skills
2. To participate in leadership activities
3. To engage in location-based natural science
Outdoor education provides a unique educational
venue, and our Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
is one of the world's premier outdoor classrooms.
Additional, significant benefits of the program are
the self-confidence and personal growth that
develop as a result of the outdoor education
experiences. Those qualities are positively
manifested in all aspects of a student’s life.
Environmental issues are often discussed on outdoor excursions, and those issues are frequently woven into the traditional classroom in a variety of academic subjects.
2009-2010 Outdoor Education trips
HWA's sixth and seventh graders backpacked in the Porcupine drainage near Big Sky. The eighth graders camped by Big Timber Creek in the Crazy Mountains.
Pictures from the trips can be seen on our photo gallery.
Winter outdoor education trip destinations will be announced soon.

*Alternate activities or assignments will be offered to students who cannot attend outdoor education events.
