Marlene Schumann
Marlene Schumann has facilitated "the exercising of brains" and "the stretching of eyes" for several years. Her philosophy of teaching is that art is primarily learning how to see: "Draw what you see, not what you think you know" has become the HWA art room mantra. Prior to teaching at Headwaters, Marlene was pursuing her graduate degree in both art and education at Montana State University, where she also taught art for three years. Marlene loves Headwaters for its longer learning periods, its flexibility, and its "small town atmosphere". In her "spare" time, she can be seen 'round town skipping with her six daughter and singing and playing bodhran with Finnegan Ridge, a Celtic band. In addition to teaching at HWA, Marlene is a summer adjunct professor at MSU.
[Marlene is passionate about art–she's passionate about life–and she presents incredible art opportunities for her students. Her curriculum for HWA students is truly impressive. Plus, she's a great artist in her own right]
Susan Schwab
I don't consider working at Headwaters Academy a job; it's pure pleasure! I've been teaching Spanish and English since the days of big hair and shoulder pads. My hair may be smaller--and grayer!-- and the shoulder pads gone, but my enthusiasm and passion for teaching are at an all-time high. Working with middle school students keeps me laughing and challenged to find new ways to channel their boundless energy. When I'm not creating lesson plans, I'm with my husband Steve peddling my bike, paddling my canoe, strapping on skis, camping in my Scamp, hiking with my dog, grooming my cats, or boarding a plane for places south of the border.
[Señora Schwab has some of the most creative and enjoyable lessons for the students that I've seen. They sure make the rigorous subjects of English and Spanish more fun! Her annual Spanish Market/Fair is one of HWA's most popular and well-atteded events.]
Andy Sherman
I joined the Headwaters staff this year (2009) after five years of being a stay-at-home parent for my two daughters, and I am really looking forward to this job change. Previously, I taught math and science off and on (more the former) since 1989 in classrooms in Alaska, Michigan, Minnesota, and Montana. Originally from Michigan, I discovered Bozeman in 1992 while attending graduate school at Montana State, and my wife and I found a path back five years ago after spending several years in Billings.
[Another understated genius, Andy is a huge hit with his students. Because he is modest, he'll never be the one to tell you that he was nominated and seriously considered for Montana Teacher of the Year.]
