The Headwaters Academy curriculum is designed to develop advanced academic skills in critical analysis, public speaking, written communication, math, science and technology. The curriculum is designed to tap in to a middle school student's natural curiosity. In a safe and supportive environment, our students are encouraged to take on academic challenges, voice opinions, persevere through adversity, and assume leadership roles. Students are entrusted with the freedom to explore and share their thoughts in an environment based on mutual respect.
The fine arts are considered an essential part of the curriculum and every Headwaters Academy student takes at least 90 minutes of visual art, music, and drama per week for the entire year. Headwaters Academy additionally challenges students to develop in the areas we have determined as the "Core Competencies" of a Headwaters graduate. Beginning in the sixth grade, we focus on problem solving, relationships, and organization. In the seventh grade, we shift the focus to confidence, communication, and creativity. In the eighth grade, we add accountability, independent thinking and scholarship.
