SPECIAL ACTIVITIES, PAGE 2
Spanish Market:
All seventh and eighth graders take Spanish, and each year they sponsor the popular Fiesta de los paises and Mercado. Seventh graders display their class projects on different Spanish-speaking countries, while the eighth graders prepare a variety of "South-of-the Border" foods, and they sell crafts made by Mexico's Tarahumara Indians.
They create a casa de cambio for people
to exchange their American dollars for
Mexican pesos. When the big day comes,
the tri-fold projects are put on display, the
food and gift items are set out, and the
Headwaters students and students from
an area school flood the event. Was it
mentioned that HWA's eighth graders must
speak Spanish the whole time? Good thing
they're well taught!
Extracurricular Activities
Every year, each teacher sponsors an extra-curricular activity. While some of the activities are consistent every year–like MathCounts, music concerts and student council–others tap into the particular teacher's avocations and current student interests. Programs/activities like "Girls' Empowerment," aromatherapy, fly tying and fishing, primitive wilderness skills, and folf were all quite popular. An added after-school bonus: HWA students may participate in all Bozeman School District middle school extra-curricular sports and clubs.
