FIELD STUDY TOURS
Read about the 8th grade FST to Ecuador Each spring, Headwaters Academy students
are able to participate in a very cool, teacher-
supervised, off-campus experience for approxi-
mately one week. Following the optional, fun-
filled, experientially-driven, yet academically
oriented experience, every HWA student
pursues a passion from the trip and develops
a major project. Working with HWA's staff for
several days, the student creates a thesis and
researches that thesis to develop supporting
evidence. Visual aids are developed, often
digitally, and presentation methods practiced.
Finally, each student gives his/her presentation
to the entire Headwaters community: peers,
teachers, parents, grandparents and siblings.
Many parents have described the FST experience
as a positive rite of passage!
6th and 7th Grades
Students in the sixth and seventh grades travel to various regional locations in Montana
and, sometimes, to neighboring states. A significant goal of FST is to provide hands-on experiences: students have created art projects with renowned artists, "fished" aquatic insects from blue-ribbon trout streams to categorize and identify, paddled rafts down the world-renowned Smith River, and leapt far into the sky from Idaho sand dunes–among
many other activities. There's an occasional museum and speaker, as well.
